ServiceSeeking's plumber guide of 23 February 2026 puts the average at $120.64 an hour off quotes lodged on its platform, with the lowest quote at $40 and 81% of quotes charged hourly. Airtasker's plumber cost guide, last updated 15 March 2024, puts the general rate at $80 to $100 an hour. The band here brackets both. After-hours and emergency work sits above it.

Hourly rate: ServiceSeeking plumber pricing guide, 23 February 2026 (average $120.64, minimum $40, 81% of quotes hourly) and Airtasker's plumber cost guide, last updated 15 March 2024 ($80 to $100 an hour general guide, plus a task table including drain cleaning $100 to $170 and toilet unblocking $95 to $180). Line items are that labour rate times a realistic time on the tools, plus materials. The $1,400 to $2,200 supplied-and-installed figure for an electric storage unit is the range Australian plumbing cost guides quote for 2026 and should be checked against your own supplier price before you use it. Licensing: QBCC 'when you need a licence', nsw.gov.au plumbing and drainage licences, Victoria's Building and Plumbing Commission. Compliance certificate threshold: Victoria, over $750 including GST, issued within five days. GST: ATO tax invoices and ATO NDIS guidance. No call-out range is given because no source that publishes its method quotes one.
Licence and certificates
Plumbing is licensed in every state and territory and there is no dollar threshold below which you can do it unlicensed. Queensland's QBCC requires a licence for plumbing, drainage and gas fitting work of any value, unlike general building work which starts at $3,300. NSW licenses under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011 through Fair Trading, with separate classes for plumbing, drainage, gas fitting and roof plumbing. Victoria registers and licenses plumbers by class through the Building and Plumbing Commission, which took over the Victorian Building Authority's functions. WA is Building and Energy, SA is Consumer and Business Services. Put your licence number on the invoice. Customers check it, and in a dispute an unlicensed job is often unenforceable.
GST on plumbing work
Nearly all plumbing is a taxable supply, so 10% GST applies to labour and materials alike. The one exception worth knowing is home modification work funded under an NDIS participant's plan. That can be GST-free, but only if all four ATO conditions are met: the participant has an NDIS plan in effect, the supply is a reasonable and necessary support in that plan, there is a written agreement covering it, and it is a supply the Health Minister has determined to be GST-free. Miss any one and it is taxable.
Payment terms that get paid
Domestic maintenance is usually paid on the day, on the spot, by card or transfer before you leave. For a bathroom or a fit-off, a deposit plus progress claims is normal, and in Victoria a written major domestic building contract is required once the work is over $10,000. On commercial and subcontract work you are into the security of payment regime: in NSW a progress payment to a subcontractor becomes payable 20 business days after the payment claim, and 15 business days for a head contractor. In Queensland a subcontract cannot lawfully push payment past 25 business days, and if the contract is silent the default is 10 business days.
Quoting without the argument
Write down what you cannot see. A quote to replace a hot water unit should say plainly what happens if the pipework behind it is not to current standard, and name the hourly rate and the sort of fittings that would apply, so the variation is a number the customer already agreed to rather than an argument on the day.
No law says the number must appear on the invoice itself in most states, but put it there anyway. Plumbing is licensed everywhere in Australia with no dollar threshold, customers and insurers check the register, and a compliance certificate you issue will carry the number regardless. It also protects you. If a customer later claims the work was done by an unlicensed operator, an invoice carrying your licence number and the certificate number is the first thing that settles it. It costs you nothing and it closes an argument before it starts.
Yes. Where you buy the unit, mark it up and install it, the whole supply is taxable and 10% GST applies to the materials and the labour together. You claim the GST credit on what you paid for the unit, and you charge GST on what you sell it for. It is only different if the customer buys the unit themselves and you invoice labour only, in which case you charge GST on your labour and they have their own receipt for the unit. Do not split an invoice to try to avoid GST on materials.
Invoice it as a separate, named line, not folded into the original amount. Write what you found, the extra hours and the extra materials, and price them at the rate you quoted originally. If you have a text or a photo from the day you found it, reference it on the invoice. Customers argue with a total that moved and rarely argue with a line that says what changed. The cleanest version of this is a quote that already named the hourly rate for anything found behind the wall.
A quote is not a tax invoice and has no legally mandated contents, but the ones that stop arguments all carry the same things: who you are and your ABN, exactly what is and is not included, the price with GST shown, how long the quote stands, and what happens when the job changes. Write down what you cannot see. A quote to replace a hot water unit should say plainly what happens if the pipework behind it is not to current standard, and name the hourly rate and the sort of fittings that would apply, so the variation is a number the customer already agreed to rather than an argument on the day. Once the work is done you raise a tax invoice, and that one does have legal requirements: the words tax invoice, your identity and ABN, the date, a description with quantity and price, the GST amount, and the buyer's identity once the total reaches $1,000.
