Starting figures, not gospel. Yours depend on your city, your overheads and the job.
ServiceSeeking's tiler guide of 11 February 2026 shows tilers overwhelmingly quote by area: 66% per square metre at an average of $65.80, against 9% by the day at an average of $604.60, which is $75.58 an hour over eight hours. The average tiling job total is $2,653. Because so few tilers quote hourly, the hourly band here is the day rate converted, not a separately surveyed figure. Treat the per square metre rate as the real number and the hourly rate as what you use for repairs.

Rates: ServiceSeeking tiler pricing guide, 11 February 2026 (average $65.80 per square metre, minimum $10, average day $604.60 equal to $75.58 an hour, average job $2,653, split 66% per square metre, 9% daily, 9% fixed). Airtasker's tile flooring guide corroborates the area rate, putting tile flooring installation at an average of about $72 per square metre and noting Sydney runs more than 40% above Adelaide. The wall rate is set above the floor rate because wall tiling carries more cutting and no gravity assist; that relationship is standard in the trade but the exact premium is not separately published, so check it against your own recent jobs. Waterproofing: AS 3740, NSW licensing of wet area waterproofing, QBCC waterproofing licence class. GST: ATO tax invoices and ATO NDIS guidance. No call-out range is given because no source that publishes its method quotes one.
Licence and certificates
Tiling itself sits under the general building licence thresholds: a contractor licence in NSW for residential work over $5,000 including GST, a QBCC licence in Queensland over $3,300. Waterproofing is the part that is separately controlled. In NSW waterproofing of wet areas is licensed work and tilers carry it as an endorsement on their licence, and in Queensland waterproofing is its own QBCC licence class. The standard is AS 3740, Waterproofing of domestic wet areas, and it governs where the membrane goes and how high. If you are not licensed or endorsed to waterproof, sub it out and name the waterproofer and their licence number on your invoice, because that is the document the builder and the owner will look for in five years.
GST on wall and floor tiling work
Tiling is a taxable supply and 10% GST applies to labour and to tiles and adhesive you supply. Most tilers lay client-supplied tiles, in which case you charge GST on your labour and the client holds their own tax invoice for the tiles. Bathroom modification work funded under an NDIS participant's plan, such as a level-entry shower, can be GST-free, but only where all four ATO conditions are met, including a written agreement and the support being in the participant's plan. Do not treat a job as GST-free just because the customer mentions NDIS.
Payment terms that get paid
Domestic bathroom work is normally a deposit, a progress payment after waterproofing passes, and the balance on completion. Splitting it at waterproofing is the sensible break because that is the point of no return and the point at which the membrane cures for the required time. Working for a builder puts you on progress claims and the security of payment rules: 20 business days after a payment claim for a subcontractor in NSW, a maximum of 25 business days in Queensland with a 10 business day default if the contract is silent.
Quoting without the argument
Price the substrate, not just the tile. A quote should say what condition the floor has to be in for your rate to hold and what the rate is to screed, level or sheet it if it is not. Also state the tile size band your rate covers, because a client swapping to 900 by 900 after you quoted on 300 by 600 has changed the job, and that needs to be a priced variation rather than a surprise.
It depends on your state and your licence. In NSW waterproofing wet areas is licensed work and tilers carry it as an endorsement, so a plain tiling licence is not enough. In Queensland waterproofing is a separate QBCC licence class. The standard everywhere is AS 3740. If you are not endorsed, sub it out, and put the waterproofer's name, licence number and certificate number on your own invoice. Failed waterproofing is the single most expensive callback in the trade, and the paperwork trail is what decides who wears it.
Per square metre for the tiling, fixed for everything around it. Two thirds of tilers quote per square metre according to ServiceSeeking's 2026 data, and it is the fairest method because the customer can measure it. But the preparation, the screed, the waterproofing and the silicone are not area jobs, they are set pieces, so price them as their own lines. A small bathroom also carries the same setup and cleanup as a big one, so either set a minimum job charge or lift the rate on jobs under about 10 square metres and say so in the quote.
They do, but only if you wrote it down first. A quote for client-supplied tiles should say plainly that you have allowed a set wastage percentage, that you are not responsible for tile quality, tonal variation or shortfall, and that a return trip to finish is charged at your hourly rate plus a call-out. Then when the second delivery arrives three days later, the return visit is an agreed line on the invoice. Take photos of the damaged tiles when you open the boxes, before you lay a single one.
A quote is not a tax invoice and has no legally mandated contents, but the ones that stop arguments all carry the same things: who you are and your ABN, exactly what is and is not included, the price with GST shown, how long the quote stands, and what happens when the job changes. Once the work is done you raise a tax invoice, and that one does have legal requirements: the words tax invoice, your identity and ABN, the date, a description with quantity and price, the GST amount, and the buyer's identity once the total reaches $1,000.

Alongside the quote you would normally issue: Waterproofing certificate certifying compliance with AS 3740, Photographic record of the membrane before tiling, Membrane product data sheet and warranty, Tile and adhesive warranty passed to the owner.
