ServiceSeeking's concreter guide of 12 February 2026 shows concreters almost never quote hourly: 70% quote per square metre at an average of $92.27, and 10% quote by the day at an average of $848.82, which is $106.10 an hour over eight hours. The hourly band here is that day rate converted, not a separately surveyed hourly figure, so treat the per square metre rate as the real number. The minimum quoted rate on the platform is $10 per square metre, which reflects labour-only pours where the customer supplies the concrete.

Rates: ServiceSeeking concreter pricing guide, 12 February 2026 (average $92.27 per square metre, minimum $10, average day $848.82 equal to $106.10 an hour, split 70% per square metre and 10% daily). Its concrete driveway and path guide puts the average at $97 per square metre with entry level from $20. The exposed aggregate range of $100 to $150 per square metre supplied and laid is the range Australian concreting cost guides publish for 2026, with Western Sydney quoted higher at $130 to $200; check it against your own supplier and your region. The minimum job charge of $1,500 to $2,000 for very small pours also comes from those guides rather than from platform quote data, so treat it as a starting point. Licensing: QBCC concreting licence and its exclusion of structural concrete, nsw.gov.au $5,000 threshold, Victoria $10,000, WA $20,000. GST: ATO tax invoices. No call-out range is given because concreters do not generally charge one.

Queensland's QBCC issues a concreting licence over the $3,300 threshold, but it does not cover structural concrete, so house slabs, footings and retaining walls over 1 metre need a builder's licence instead. NSW requires a contractor licence for concreting work over $5,000 including GST in labour and materials. Victoria requires registration as a building practitioner for domestic building work of $10,000 or more. WA sets builder registration at $20,000. Know exactly where your licence stops, because the line between a driveway and a structural slab is the line between a valid job and an unenforceable contract.
GST on concreting work
Concreting is a taxable supply and 10% GST applies to the pour, the labour, the mesh and the pump hire. Concrete delivery, pump hire and cutting subcontractors all invoice you with GST, and you claim those credits, so keep every docket. The delivery docket matters twice over: it is your GST substantiation and it is your proof of the mix strength if a slab is ever questioned. Nothing in concreting is GST-free.
Payment terms that get paid
Concreting takes a deposit, always. The concrete itself is ordered and paid for against your account, and a cancelled or short-ordered load is money gone, so a deposit covering the material order before the truck is booked is standard and reasonable. NSW caps the deposit on residential building work at 10% of the contract price, so on larger jobs stage the payments instead: preparation, pour, finish. Balance on completion, 7 days. On builder work the security of payment rules apply, 20 business days after a payment claim in NSW and a maximum of 25 business days in Queensland.
Quoting without the argument
Quote the thickness, the mesh and the mix strength in writing, because that is where a cheap quote hides. Say 100mm with SL72 mesh on 50mm sand blinding, 25MPa, and a customer comparing quotes can see what they are buying. Then price excavation, spoil removal and access separately, since those are the three that blow out and none of them are visible from the driveway when you quote.
In Queensland, no. The QBCC concreting licence does not extend to structural concrete work, which means house slabs, footings and retaining walls over 1 metre need a builder's licence. That trips people up because the pour looks the same as a driveway. NSW requires a contractor licence for concreting work over $5,000 and the same structural distinction applies through the way the licence classes are written. Check your own licence conditions before you quote a slab, because a contract for work you are not licensed to do is generally unenforceable, meaning you cannot recover payment through a court.
Per square metre for the pour, fixed for everything around it. Seven in ten concreters quote per square metre according to ServiceSeeking's 2026 data, and it is the fairest method for a driveway or a patio because the customer can measure the area. But excavation, spoil removal, formwork on a fall and access charges are not area jobs, so give each its own line. Small pours also need a minimum, because the truck, the pump and the crew cost the same for 8 square metres as for 40. Say the minimum in the quote.
Yes, for at least five years, and file them against the job rather than in a pile. The docket is two things at once. It is your GST substantiation for the credit you claim on the concrete, which the ATO expects you to hold for five years. It is also the only proof of the mix strength and the volume delivered if a slab cracks and someone asks questions two years later. Photograph the docket on site and attach it to the job the same day. It is thirty seconds that has settled a lot of arguments.
