What handymen actually charge in 2026

Starting figures, not gospel. Yours depend on your city, your overheads and the job.

$75 to $90per hour, charged out

ServiceSeeking's handyman guide of 10 February 2026 puts the average at $89.84 an hour from quotes on its platform, with a minimum of $30, an average day rate of $604.15 which is $75.52 an hour over eight hours, and an average job total of $357. The split is 64% hourly, 14% daily, 14% fixed. The band brackets the hourly average and the day rate equivalent. The average job of $357 is the useful number here: handyman work is short jobs, so a minimum charge matters more than the rate does.

Rates: ServiceSeeking handyman pricing guide, 10 February 2026 (average $89.84 an hour, minimum $30, average day $604.15, average job $357, split 64% hourly, 14% daily, 14% fixed), sourced from quotes lodged on its platform. Task prices for flat pack assembly, TV mounting and screen repair are the researched labour rate times a realistic time plus hardware, not survey data, so check them against your own recent jobs. Licence thresholds: QBCC $3,300 including labour, materials and GST, nsw.gov.au $5,000, Victoria's $10,000 registration threshold, WA $20,000, with electrical, plumbing, gas fitting and NSW and Queensland waterproofing licensed at any value. GST: ATO tax invoices, the $75,000 registration threshold and ATO NDIS guidance. No call-out range is given because a stated minimum charge is the norm in this trade rather than a separate call-out fee.

Licence and certificates

The rule is not what you do, it is what it is worth, and the threshold varies by state. Queensland allows unlicensed work up to $3,300 including labour, materials and GST. NSW allows up to $5,000 including GST. Victoria requires registration for domestic building work of $10,000 or more. WA sets its threshold at $20,000, and South Australia and the ACT license by type of work rather than a single figure. Four things always need a licence no matter how small: electrical, plumbing, gas fitting and, in NSW and Queensland, waterproofing. Structural work, restumping and demolition are off limits too. The threshold is the contract value, so you cannot split one job across three invoices to stay under it. Unlicensed work over the threshold is generally unenforceable, which means you cannot recover payment through a court.

  • · Certificate of currency for public liability insurance
  • · The licensed subcontractor's certificate where electrical or plumbing was involved

GST on handyman and property maintenance work

Handyman work is a taxable supply. Many handymen turn over less than $75,000 and are not registered for GST, in which case you cannot charge it and your document is an invoice, not a tax invoice. The threshold is turnover, not profit, and it runs over any rolling 12 months, so watch it as you grow. NDIS-funded home modification work such as grab rails and ramps can be GST-free where all four ATO conditions are met, including a written agreement and the support being in the participant's plan. That is a genuine and growing part of handyman work, so get the paperwork right rather than guessing.

Payment terms that get paid

Paid on the day, on the spot. With an average job around $357 the cost of chasing an invoice is a real share of the invoice, so take a card or a transfer before you leave the driveway. Real estate and strata clients are the exception and will insist on 30 day terms with a purchase order number on the invoice, so get the PO before you start or it will sit unpaid in an agency's inbox. For repeat property maintenance clients, invoice monthly in arrears with each attendance as a dated line.

Quoting without the argument

Quote a time band rather than a fixed price for a list of small jobs, and say what happens when the band runs out. Two to three hours at ninety an hour, anything beyond charged at the same rate with your say-so, is honest and it protects both of you. The alternative, quoting a fixed price for a list you have not seen, is how handymen end up doing a fourth hour for free on every job.

Handyman invoice questions

What can I legally do without a licence?

It depends on your state and on the value of the whole job. Queensland's threshold is $3,300 including labour, materials and GST, NSW is $5,000, Victoria requires registration at $10,000, and WA at $20,000. Under the threshold, general repairs, assembly, hanging, patching and painting are fine. Over it, you need the relevant licence. Four things need a licence at any value: electrical, plumbing, gas fitting and, in NSW and Queensland, waterproofing. Structural work, restumping and demolition are out too. The threshold is the contract value, not the invoice value, so splitting a job does not help.

Should I charge a call-out fee or a minimum?

A minimum, and say it before you book the job. ServiceSeeking's 2026 data puts the average handyman job at $357, which tells you the trade is short jobs, and a twenty minute task twenty minutes away is a loss at any hourly rate. Most handymen set a one or two hour minimum that includes travel. Put it on your quote and in your booking confirmation, not on the invoice as a surprise. A call-out fee on top of an hourly rate reads as double dipping to a domestic customer, whereas a stated minimum reads as reasonable.

How do I invoice a job where I had to bring in a sparky?

Show it as its own line naming the licensed contractor and their licence number, and reference their certificate. Do not bury a subcontractor's electrical work inside your general labour line, because on paper that looks like unlicensed electrical work by you. Charge the subcontractor's cost plus a coordination margin if that is what you agreed with the customer, and say so. If the sparky invoices the customer directly, still note it on your invoice so the job record is complete. That certificate is what an insurer will ask for years later.

What has to be on an Australian invoice?

Seven things for a sale under $1,000: that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, your identity, your ABN, the date it was issued, a description of the work including quantity and price, the GST amount payable, and which parts of the sale are taxable. At $1,000 or more you also need the buyer's identity or ABN. This tool fills all of them and blocks printing until they are there.

Do I put my licence number on a handyman and property maintenance invoice?

Alongside the invoice you would normally issue: Certificate of currency for public liability insurance, The licensed subcontractor's certificate where electrical or plumbing was involved.
