ServiceSeeking's roofer guide of 2 March 2026 puts the average hourly rate at $113.42 and the average day rate at $485.06, which is about $60.63 an hour over eight hours. That gap is real and it is why the band is wide: hourly quotes are repair call-outs, day rates are booked work with the crew already on site. The same guide puts the average at $51.98 per square metre and $77.24 per lineal metre, with the pricing split 32% daily, 25% per square metre, 20% hourly and 18% per metre.

Rates: ServiceSeeking roofer pricing guide, 2 March 2026 (average $113.42 an hour, average day $485.06, average $51.98 per square metre, average $77.24 per lineal metre, minimums $40 hourly and $200 daily, split 32% daily, 25% per square metre, 20% hourly, 18% per metre). Line items are that labour rate times a realistic time plus materials; the restoration per square metre range reflects Australian roof restoration cost guides for 2026 and should be checked against your own coating cost. Licensing: NSW roof plumbing class under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011, Victoria's roofing plumbing class, QBCC and NSW general building thresholds for tiling and sheeting. Safety: Safe Work Australia on high risk construction work, which includes a risk of a fall of more than 2 metres and requires a SWMS before work starts. GST: ATO tax invoices. No call-out range is given because no source that publishes its method quotes one.
Licence and certificates
This is the one most people get wrong. Roof plumbing, which covers gutters, downpipes, box gutters, valleys, flashings, rainwater collection and the connection of roof drainage to stormwater, is licensed plumbing work in every state. NSW licenses roof plumbing as its own class under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011. Victoria licenses it as a roofing (stormwater) plumbing class. Roof tiling and metal roof sheeting sit under the general building licence instead, so in NSW they need a contractor licence over $5,000 and in Queensland a QBCC licence over $3,300. A lot of roofing jobs involve both, which means two licences. Put the relevant number on the invoice, and if you subbed out the roof plumbing, name who did it.
GST on roofing work
Roofing is a taxable supply and 10% GST applies. The one that catches roofers is insurance work. When you repair storm damage and the insurer pays, the customer is still the recipient of the supply in most arrangements, so invoice as instructed by the insurer and show the GST. The insurer generally settles GST-exclusive with a GST-registered owner because the owner claims the credit, so confirm before you write the invoice rather than after. Get the claim number on the invoice.
Payment terms that get paid
Repairs are paid on completion. Restorations and re-roofs run on a deposit plus progress claims, because the material order is the bulk of the cost. Insurance work is different again and slower: the invoice goes to the insurer or the builder managing the claim, and 30 days from approval is normal, so put the claim number and the assessor's name on the invoice or it sits. On subcontract work the security of payment timeframes apply, 20 business days after a payment claim in NSW and a maximum of 25 business days in Queensland.
Quoting without the argument
Quote from the roof, not from the ground, and put the photos in the quote. Number the defects, price each one, and mark which are optional. A roof quote that says repoint 24 lineal metres of ridge, replace 11 cracked tiles, photos 3 to 7, is a quote that survives a second opinion. It also means a customer who declines an item has declined it in writing.
Yes, in every state. Gutters, downpipes, box gutters, valleys, flashings and the connection of roof drainage to the stormwater system are roof plumbing, which is licensed plumbing work, not general roofing. NSW licenses roof plumbing as its own class under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011, and Victoria as a roofing plumbing class. Roof tiling and sheeting are different and fall under the general building licence. It is common for a job to need both, so if you hold one and not the other, sub the work out and name the licensed contractor on your invoice.
Put the claim number, the insurer and the assessor's name on the invoice, and match your line items to the scope that was approved. If you did work outside the approved scope, invoice it separately to the owner with a note saying it was not part of the claim, because a mixed invoice will hold up the whole payment. Confirm before you invoice whether the insurer wants the amount GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive. Where the owner is registered for GST, insurers usually settle GST-exclusive because the owner claims the credit themselves.
If someone could fall more than 2 metres, yes. Construction work with a risk of a fall of more than 2 metres is high risk construction work under the WHS Regulations, and a safe work method statement has to be prepared before the work starts. A single-storey gutter line clears 2 metres almost everywhere in Australia. A generic SWMS pulled off the internet is not enough on its own either, because it has to reflect the actual site, the actual hazards and the actual crew. Reference it on the invoice for commercial and strata work, because they file it.
Seven things for a sale under $1,000: that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, your identity, your ABN, the date it was issued, a description of the work including quantity and price, the GST amount payable, and which parts of the sale are taxable. At $1,000 or more you also need the buyer's identity or ABN. This tool fills all of them and blocks printing until they are there.

Alongside the invoice you would normally issue: Plumbing compliance certificate for roof plumbing work (state equivalent), SWMS for work with a risk of a fall over 2 metres, which is nearly every roof, Manufacturer warranty for sheeting, coating or membrane, passed to the owner, Workmanship warranty statement, Asbestos clearance certificate where old cement sheeting was removed.
