Rates: ServiceSeeking plasterer pricing guide, 24 February 2026 (average $77.37 an hour, minimum $25, average $41.16 per square metre, average day $549.45, split 58% hourly, 17% per square metre, 15% daily), sourced from quotes lodged on its platform. The supply-fix-set-and-finish range of $35 to $65 per square metre sits above ServiceSeeking's $41.16 average because that average mixes set-only and patch work with full supply and install; check it against your own board cost. Licensing: nsw.gov.au dry plastering work and wet plastering work, QBCC plastering drywall and plastering solid licence classes, Victoria's $10,000 domestic builder registration threshold. GST: ATO tax invoices and ATO NDIS guidance. No call-out range is given because no source that publishes its method quotes one.

Licence and certificates

Plastering is licensed in NSW and Queensland and treated as general building work elsewhere. NSW splits it in two: dry plastering, which is wall and ceiling lining, and wet plastering, which is solid plaster and render. Both need a contractor licence for residential work over $5,000 including GST in labour and materials, and each has its own qualification path. Queensland's QBCC has matching classes, plastering drywall and plastering solid, over the $3,300 threshold. Victoria has no plastering-specific registration but requires registration as a domestic builder for work of $10,000 or more. Check whether your licence covers wet as well as dry before you quote a render job, because the two are separate.

  • · Fire rated system certification where fire rated board was installed
  • · Acoustic system certification for party walls in units and townhouses
  • · Board and compound product data sheets for the builder's handover pack

GST on plastering work

Plastering is a taxable supply and 10% GST applies to labour and to board, cornice and compound you supply. There is no plastering-specific exemption. The exception that occasionally applies is home modification work funded under an NDIS participant's plan, such as making good after a doorway is widened for wheelchair access, which can be GST-free where all four ATO conditions are met, including a written agreement and the support being in the participant's plan.

Payment terms that get paid

Domestic patch and repair work is paid on completion, 7 days. New build and renovation work for a builder runs on progress claims, usually fix and set as two claims, and the security of payment rules apply: 20 business days after a payment claim for a subcontractor in NSW, a maximum of 25 business days in Queensland with a 10 business day default if the contract is silent. Plasterers get squeezed on retention more than most trades because the trade sits late in the program. Agree the retention amount and its release date in writing before you start.

Quoting without the argument

Quote fixing and setting as separate amounts even when you are doing both. It is the only way a variation makes sense later, because a builder who changes the sheet layout has changed the fix and not the set. It also lets you invoice progressively at the two natural stages instead of waiting until the whole job is sanded, which on a long build is weeks of your money sitting in somebody else's account.

Plasterer invoice questions

Do I need a licence to plaster in my state?

In NSW and Queensland, yes, over the threshold. NSW licenses dry plastering, meaning wall and ceiling lining, and wet plastering, meaning solid plaster and render, as two separate classes, and a contractor licence is required for residential work over $5,000 including labour, materials and GST. Queensland's QBCC has the same split as plastering drywall and plastering solid, over $3,300. Victoria has no plastering-specific registration but requires domestic builder registration at $10,000 or more. Check which class you hold before quoting render work, because a dry plastering licence does not cover it.

How do I price a patch job that only takes an hour?

Set a minimum charge and put it on the quote, not on the invoice as a surprise. A single patch is an hour on site plus a return trip to set and sand, plus travel and materials, so a genuine one hour job does not exist. Most plasterers set a minimum of two to three hours or a fixed patch price around $150 to $300 including the return visit. Say on the quote that the price includes a second visit to set and sand and excludes painting, because the customer expecting a finished wall on day one is the most common complaint in patch work.

The builder is holding retention on my plastering. Is that allowed?

Generally yes, if it is in the subcontract you signed, and it is normal in commercial and larger residential work. What is not fine is retention with no agreed release date. Get the percentage, the defects liability period and the release date in writing before you start, and diarise the release. Retention is your money held against defects, so when the period ends, invoice for it as its own claim with the original contract reference. Under the security of payment legislation in NSW and Queensland a retention release claim is a payment claim like any other, with the same timeframes.

What has to be on an Australian invoice?

Seven things for a sale under $1,000: that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, your identity, your ABN, the date it was issued, a description of the work including quantity and price, the GST amount payable, and which parts of the sale are taxable. At $1,000 or more you also need the buyer's identity or ABN. This tool fills all of them and blocks printing until they are there.

Do I put my licence number on a plastering invoice?

Alongside the invoice you would normally issue: Fire rated system certification where fire rated board was installed, Acoustic system certification for party walls in units and townhouses, Board and compound product data sheets for the builder's handover pack.
